Abstract

A complex engineering system is composed of elements and sub-systems. In operation, they may be damaged, leading to their reliability indicators being degraded and directly affecting the system's performance. If they are restored after failure, the reliability of the system depends on the working time between failures and their restoration time. Such a system is called a restorative serial system. To evaluate the reliability of the complex engineering system, it is necessary to build a general model describing the system's operation and its reliability evaluation model, including state models, state transition matrices, and systems of state transition probability equations for the whole system. This is the content of the article. From the general model, it will be applied to evaluate the reliability of certain complex engineering systems, such as the national rail transport system, the urban rail transport system, or their sub-systems, such as railways, bridges, tunnels, rolling stock or metro trains, information and signal, power supply, stations etc., depending on their functions, tasks and characteristics
